Letters to Our Children – October

Some friends and I are writing letters to our children in a monthly blog circle! After you read mine, click here to check out my friend Jennifer’s letter next. If you click through each letter, you’ll eventually find yourself right back here!

dear emily,

Hello again, chickadee! Another month is flying by! We’re currently getting ready for Halloween and enjoying lots of fun fall activities.  You and your brother plan to dress up as Violet and Dash from the movie, The Incredibles, for Halloween.  And of course, you convinced daddy and mommy to be Mr. and Mrs. Incredible too. 🙂  I love watching you and your brother run around the house in your costumes acting out the movie and adding your own imaginative play into the mix! You can be very dramatic!  Something tells me you’ll really enjoy acting in school plays and musicals when you get older (just like your dad!).

We live close to a run-down industrial area and the other day we went out exploring. You were excited to ride your bike all the way there and even allowed me to take some pictures of you!
It’s pretty wonderful that so much beauty can be found in the world even in the most unexpected places.  And your young eyes always manage to find that beauty. I hope you hold on to that quality.

One thing that I’ve noticed over this past month, is how alike we are.  Many people say that we look a lot alike (although I think you’re much prettier!), but I’m referring to the way that we think.  There are many times when I know exactly what you’re about to say or do, because I know that it’s the same way I would react in that situation.  We’re very much on the same wavelength! It’s pretty amazing.

You know what else is amazing? The fact that my love for you keeps growing. I didn’t think it would be possible to love you more than I did when you were first born, but somehow, as you keep getting bigger, day by day, the space that’s carved out in my heart for you seems to keep getting bigger too.  Sometimes I think my heart will just burst with all that love!  I know that there will come a day when we don’t see eye to eye and when you want to rebel and disagree with me and grow more distant, or perhaps independent is the right word.  But I just want you to know, when that time comes, that I will always have a love for you that is boundless. I think that space in my heart with your name on it will just continue to expand.  And I hope we both will remember that when the tough times arrive.

But for now, just keep being the totally awesome person that you are!

Love always,

  • Rebekah - Terri, your daughter is beautiful inside and out! And I know what you mean about the space inside your heart that just keeps growing. I keep thinking that I could never love my daughters more than I do, but then another day comes and I do love them more. It just keeps growing. I just love these photos, too.
